When it's time to select fencing for your property, you may be overwhelmed by how many types of fences there are from which to choose. But the decision largely comes down to function and form. Make sure you have thought about the purpose it is serving. Do you need a fence to keep animals in, are you trying to create privacy, maybe you just want it to define a space or provide decoration. Whatever the reason, these questions should be answered first, because if you are looking for privacy, chain link and aluminum will not provide it for you. Chain-link fencing and other metal products often make for superior security fences. Chain link is the most economical choice in fencing. Therefore, if the intended function of your fencing is security, you may just want the cheapest option of chain link fencing. In choosing between types of wood fences, consider their potential for compatibility both with your house style and with your landscape-design. A wood fence offers a barrier of sorts and keeps the outside world from looking in. Wood fences are an excellent choice for privacy fencing, whether it be in terms of noise barriers or, more commonly, visual barriers. Wood fences (along with their vinyl copy-cats) provide some of the most attractive fencing options available when your chief concern is creating a backyard sanctuary. Wood fences are usually made with spruce or cypress. Spruce is a less expensive material and looks like a raw wood. Cedar is a more expensive material that has a natural red tone. Cedar is also naturally insect repellent. One material is not better than the other as far as quality is concerned. Vinyl fences look like real wood, but which fence materials is better? The answer is not as easy as you might think. And there are many factors that will determine the best materials for your project. Some companies may just try to sell you the more expensive vinyl fencing, citing it’s superior warranty and virtually no maintenance. Others may steer you towards wood fencing, because of the cost. While both of these answers are true, the final decision comes from you, the consumer. PVC or vinyl costs roughly twice as much as wood to have installed Also, what type of yard do you have? This question will be an important deciding factor in your purchase. Vinyl or PVC fencing is not well suited for steep sloping yards. Wood fencing, built onsite, can be built on any terrain. While the PVC may seem to be a better product, wood fencing is still the predominant choice for most yards. It is more cost effective despite the rising cost of building materials and products, and it can be the decorative add on you have been looking for. Another thing you will want to consider when selecting your type of fencing, is who will be installing it. Wood fences can be easier to install. Besides the fence and posts (2 posts for every fence section), you will need a level, bags of concrete, measuring tape, a circular saw, post hole digger, nails, string and stakes, and some sweat and muscles. It goes easiest when you have 2-4 people helping. You will also need to be sure you know you property lines and how much easement you are required to leave unfenced. To keep your fence looking as new as possible for as long as possible, wood fence experts recommend the following:
