There are a variety of websites designed for people to sell their items. the most common are Amazon, EBay, Etsy, and Craig's list. Each site have its negative and positive selling points. Before you list your items for sale on any of these sites, you need to have a good understanding of all your options and the cost incurred.

Amazon: When you sell in the Amazon Marketplace you place your items in front of millions of customers--your items are displayed right alongside those carried by Amazon.com! There are no fees unless you sell.

When your item sells, Amazon collects the sales price and shipping costs from the buyer, deducts a referral fee of 6 to 25 percent of the product price, a variable closing fee, and a per-item fee of $0.99. The $0.99 per-item fee is waived for Pro Merchant Subscribers.

Here's how it works:

   Sale price of the item
   Shipping credit
-  Referral Fee of 6-25% of the sale price
-  Variable Closing Fee
-  $0.99 Fixed Closing Fee (waived for Pro Merchant Subscribers)
-------------------------------------
= Total deposited to seller's account

Ebay: Whether you're starting a business or just want to make some extra cash, selling on eBay is a fun way to do it.

The cost to sell on eBay varies depending on which eBay site you're selling on, and how you list your item. When you sell an item, you're able to review your fees on the listing form before you submit your listing.

The fees EBay charges fall into 3 categories:

  • Insertion fees: When you list an item, you're charged an insertion fee for the listing. The insertion fee is based on the starting price and the category of the item. If you specified a reserve price, the insertion fee is based on the reserve price amount.

  • Final value fees: If the item sells, you're charged a final value fee. This fee is based on the final sale price and category of the item. It does not include shipping costs.

Note: For listings on eBay Motors this fee is called the successful listing fee. For listings in the eBay Real Estate category this fee is called the notice fee.

  • Listing upgrades: If you add upgrades to your listing, such as a subtitle or extra pictures, there's an additional charge for each listing upgrade.

Etsy is the online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade. They connect buyers with independent creators and shop owners to find the very best in handmade, vintage and supplies.

Listing fees at Etsy are only 20 cents for each item listed If I list one ceramic mug, it costs 20 cents. If I have three of the same mug and put them all in the same item listing, it costs 60 cents. After four months if the item does not sell out it is unlisted and you may easily relist it if you like (at the same price). When you make a sale on Etsy, you will be charged 3.5% of the total sale price. This percentage does not include the shipping price. All fees and items on Etsy are listed in US Dollars. Currency conversion is handled automatically by our payment processing service like our merchant account.  You can sell: Goods handmade by you, Commercial and handmade crafting supplies, or vintage items 20 years or older.

How it works : List an item on Etsy for a fee. Shoppers find your item and pay you directly, then you ship the item to your customer.
